CMU is seeking an experienced Production Artist to join the Marketing & Communications division as part of the recharge team within the Web & Creative department. In this role, you will be responsible for producing print-ready art for Carnegie Mellon University communications. This position requires a motivated, efficient graphic designer to provide significant production support while collaborating with the creative team, vendors, project managers and other constituents as required (online team, photo/video team, other M&C departments, clients etc).
The Production Artist will report to the Creative Director and will primarily work among a fast-paced team of project managers and graphic designers responsible for university print, digital and specialty graphics communications. Projects include simple to complex artwork for pre-press print jobs, web page building using the university's content management system (CMS) and email development based on pre-designed templates.
The production artist will deliver to the highest level of design and production standards, guidelines and processes. You are enthusiastic, dedicated, well organized and team-focused and will have the following responsibilities:
Build final print ready files. Leverage personal creative and technical skills to ensure quality final artwork prior to release to print vendors
Complete file versioning for various print and digital formats and multiple audiences
Complete light design projects using established brand style guide standards in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop software programs
Construct release-ready emails based on pre-designed templates
Ensure photos and artwork reproduce at the best quality through retouching and file optimizing using Photoshop and other appropriate software
Work hand-in-hand with project managers to manage production workload from design team to meet established deadlines
Work directly with print vendors to prepare and deliver files according to the vendor's standards
Work alongside copy content providers and proofreaders to ensure accuracy of content and copy; Make edits as required for final production
Assist with the organizing, monitoring, archiving, and maintaining of hundreds of creative files and creative assets on the server
Accurately estimate time required to complete requests
Contribute to additional, various print and digital design projects as needed
The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, a will-do attitude and confident problem-solving. You should be proficient in Apple OS, including Keynote, Adobe CC (In-Design, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Outlook). Demonstrate proficiency in electronic file organization, servers and cross-platform optimization, (FTP, PDF creation) on a Macintosh is also expected. Preferred skills also include html and experience working within content management systems.

A high level of flexibility with multiple projects, versioning and edit rounds in a fast paced environment with tight deadlines will be critical. Mental discipline is required to remain calm during crises, manage stress due to tight deadlines and personnel differences. You must be able to communicate the problem and solutions to difficult or unique situations to the Creative Director.
Bachelor's degree in Graphic Arts or related field required
3 or more years of experience in print pre-press, design firm or in-house creative department
Knowledge of standard practices for high quality and responsive web design, site architecture and user experience desired
Familiarity with photography and multimedia production and techniques a plus
Ability to travel to on, off or other campus locations as requested
