Department: OFFICE OF THE PROVOST - 063000 Department Description: Public Scholarship & Engagement (PSE) is an academic unit within the Office of the Provost, under the direction of the Vice Provost of Public Scholarship. The PSE works collaboratively with the university's ten colleges and schools, other university-wide units, centers and institutes, as well with non-university groups. One of the primary roles of PSE is to communicate the value, importance, and impact of engaged scholarship and engaged learning to these diverse audiences.
The Director of Communications & Marketing will be working in an environment that requires flexibility, initiative, willingness and the ability to solve problems. This individual must be creative and enjoy working with various PSE collaborators, each with a diverse mission, but shared commitment to fostering engaged research and teaching and building strong, strategic partnerships locally, regionally, statewide, and globally. PSE embodies an entrepreneurial environment that is mission focused, results-driven and community oriented. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, exhibit perseverance and grace under pressure, and will demonstrate an enthusiasm for working with faculty and students from various disciples as well as a diverse group of non-university community stakeholders. They will have experience collaborating with public relations firms and in creating interactive and general web content. They should be able to oversee design of attractive and informational marketing materials. Strong written and verbal communication, administrative, and organizational skills, and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities are required. The Director of Communications & Marketing will coordinate with, and follow standards and policies established by, the Office of Strategic Communications.

Job Summary: On behalf of Public Scholarship and Engagement (PSE), the Director of Communications & Marketing is responsible for the organization's integrated communications, marketing and outreach to campus and external constituents including students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the public. Serves as key advisor to the Vice Provost of Public Scholarship on communication issues; provides leadership and guidance for staff; coordinates communication and marketing for specific university-wide initiatives; with other academic units, centers and institutes. Plans, coordinates and implements a comprehensive marketing and communications plan aligned with strategic goals of the unit, its fund development program, and central campus through Strategic Communications as well as Development and Alumni Relations.
Serves as project manager for all projects related to the marketing/communications of PSE, including developing and managing budgets related to communications strategies. Will also craft overall messaging strategies to support unit objectives and goals, to include developing speeches and written products. Manages outreach and branding efforts, and provides and oversees a wide range of services to external constituents. Promotes the identity and overall profile of PSE, and unites its programming and initiatives in a messaging approach to promote and implement those goals.
Oversee the design and content of communications vehicles including but not limited to an annual report, unit website, social media, an electronic weekly newsletter, printed materials, multimedia and video presentations, speeches and letters, banners, invitations, and case statements and collateral materials for development purposes. Use periodic market surveys and analysis to develop and refine messages for key constituents and executes strategies that maximize the impact of unit communications on targeted audiences.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience planning, implementing and evaluating communication strategies.
Diverse experience in leading and executing projects in communications, marketing, media relations, public affairs, branding, web strategy, or a combination of education and experience.
Analytical and critical thinking skills to assess situations and provide sound professional judgment on issues dealing with public opinion and sensitive relationships.
Written and verbal communication skills to communicate complex subjects to groups with various levels of knowledge and experience.
Creative skills to visualize and guide the design of effective print and web communications. Familiarity with design software.
Experience conceptualizing and implementing a variety of visual communication needs.
Strong experience in both project management and leading cross-functional teams.
Experience working in an environment with multiple demands and short timelines, prioritizing tasks and meeting multiple deadlines.
Experience in hiring, training, coaching, assigning and reviewing work; establishing goals, creating workflows and processes, assessing performance; developing team building strategies; and providing feedback and addressing complaints and corrective action.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience creating and managing marketing and communications efforts within a large organization.
Knowledge of budgeting practices, including preparing budgets, budget reports/forecast projects and reconciling expenses.
Experience in developing and implementing coordinated communications strategies across sectors.
Executive level speech writing experience.
Knowledge and experience with all aspects of social media communications including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements, and appropriate and effective application.
Experience using SEO and Google Analytics, building reports, and applying results to improve communications.
Experience overseeing graphic designers, web designers and developers, writers, editors, photographers, consultants and videographers.
Experience with the principles, practices and techniques of video and photography production for visual storytelling, storyboarding and/or script writing.
