3M’s Strategy & Marketing Development (SMD) group is a leadership development program that offers team members the opportunity to gain in-depth business understanding and contribute to 3M’s growth. Structured as an internal project-based consultancy, SMD works closely with 3M’s Health Care, Safety & Industrial, Consumer, and Transportation & Electronics business groups, 22 divisions and enterprise functions.
The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As a Marketing & Business Development Strategist in SMD, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the company. SMD is comprised of experienced individuals from top-rated MBA programs who provide strategic marketing leadership, analytical thinking, strong project management skills, and a fresh business perspective to every project engagement. SMD strategists work closely with business development, marketing, sales, and technical personnel to identify growth opportunities and build actionable recommendations across a wide variety of domestic and international business challenges.
SMD strategists consult across 3M’s diverse businesses. Project areas include:
Marketing: new product commercialization, portfolio management (brand, pricing, promotion analysis), market and product opportunity analysis, competitive analysis, segmentation, customer analysis, business analytics, trend and economic data (megatrends, macroeconomic and geopolitical) analysis
Strategy: strategic planning and direction setting, strategic initiatives and plan execution, portfolio framework and prioritization, market platforms and technology assessment, growth plans, strategy development, etc.
Business Development: business model development, mergers and acquisitions, divestitures and ventures strategy and planning, etc.
As a Marketing & Business Development Strategist, your primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
Leading and effectively managing projects end-to-end
Analyzing business data and making actionable recommendations for clients and division management
Building strong client relationships through effective interpersonal skills
Working both collaboratively and autonomously
Leading and participating on cross-functional teams, while managing both internal and external resources, such as research suppliers, advertising/creative agencies and other corporate resource groups
Possess a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
Possess or in the last year of pursuing an MBA from an accredited institution
Possess or in the last year of pursuing an MBA with an emphasis in marketing, strategy, business analytics and/or general management from an accredited institution
Minimum of three (3) years full time work experience
Experience in new product development, business analytics or project-based consulting
Demonstrated leadership abilities and high ethical standards
Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, and team skills
Superior quantitative, analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills
Strong communication and presentation skills
Self-starters comfortable with ambiguity and changing external environments
Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international travel
Relocation: May be authorized
Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status)
